All students with some knowledge of French, however acquired, who enroll for the first time in a University of Texas at Austin course in French must have taken the University of Wisconsin College-Level Placement Test in French prior to registration to determine the appropriate course for which they should register. A schedule of administration dates for this test may be obtained from the Measurement and Evaluation Center, 2616 Wichita (471-3032), or from HRH 2.114A.
All students with some knowledge of Italian, however acquired, who enroll for the first time in a University of Texas at Austin course in Italian must have taken a placement test in Italian prior to registration to determine the appropriate course for which they should register. For information, inquire at HRH 2.114A.

TYPES OF COURSES
Courses in this department are designated FR (French), F C (French civilization), ITL (Italian), and ITC (Italian civilization).
French civilization courses may not be counted toward a major in French or toward fulfillment of the foreign language requirement for any bachelor's degree. F C 339 may be counted toward fulfillment of the Area D requirement for the Bachelor of Arts, Plan I (but not for French majors). ITC 349 (when the topic is Italian Cinema) and 360 may also be used to satisfy the Area D requirement (but not for Italian majors).
Courses with both lectures and readings in English include all French civilization courses and ITC 349 and 360.
Courses with lectures in English and readings in the foreign language include FR 301, 610, 310K, 310L, and 341K.
All other courses are conducted primarily in the foreign language.
The prerequisite for upper-division French courses is FR 312L or the equivalent unless otherwise stated.
All classes are designed to accommodate 35 or fewer students unless otherwise stated.
COURSE LEVELS AND PLACEMENT
Lower-division courses in French and Italian are at four levels, with options available as indicated below.
|Level 1:|| FR 506.
|Level 2:|| FR 507 (for students who completed 506 at the University with a grade of at least C) or FR 508K (for students with two years of high school French, or transfer or placement credit for 506).
|Levels 1 and 2, combined:|| FR 604.
|Level 3:|| FR 310K or 312K.
|Level 4:|| FR 310L (designed to follow 310K) or one of the following: FR 312L, 312M, or 312N (all designed to follow 312K).
|Levels 3 and 4, combined:|| FR 610 (combines 310K and 310L) or FR 612 (combines 312K and either 312L or 312M or 312N).
|Level 1:|| ITL 506.
|Level 2:|| ITL 507.
|Levels 1 and 2, combined:|| ITL 604.
|Level 3:|| ITL 312K.
|Level 4:|| ITL 312L.
|Levels 3 and 4, combined:|| ITL 612.
