REGISTRATION FOR CHINESE LANGUAGE COURSES

All students with some knowledge of Chinese, however acquired, who enroll for the first time in a University of Texas at Austin lower-division Chinese course must take the UT Austin Test for Credit in Chinese to determine the appropriate course for which they should register. Accelerated CHI 604 and 612 are designed for students who understand and speak but do not read or write Chinese. These students may not take CHI 506, 507, 412K, or 412L. To enroll in CHI 604, a student must have taken the placement exam and the results must indicate that the student is ineligible to receive credit for CHI 507, but if the student is eligible for credit in CHI 506, the student must not take credit for it in order to register for CHI 604.

REGISTRATION FOR JAPANESE LANGUAGE COURSES

All students with some knowledge of Japanese, however acquired, who enroll for the first time in a University of Texas at Austin lower-division Japanese course must take the UT Austin Test for Credit in Japanese to determine the appropriate course for which they should register.

LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TESTS

Chinese and Japanese placement tests are administered by the Measurement and Evaluation Center, 2616 Wichita (471-3032) and are given only at scheduled times immediately prior to registration. Contact the Measurement and Evaluation Center for a schedule of test dates. Hindi, Korean, and Malayalam credit tests are administered and scheduled through the Department of Asian Studies at a specified time each semester. Individual tests are not given.

CATALOGS/DEGREE REQUIREMENTS/ADVISING

Students should consult the Asian Studies advisers to determine under which catalog they are eligible to graduate since new major requirements are in place for students who entered under the 1996-1998 undergraduate catalog.
