TEX (Telephone Enrollment eXchange) is a computerized system that gives a student access to registration functions and other services via a touch-tone telephone. TEX services are provided under two phone numbers as summarized below.
The following applications are available Monday through Saturday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm to midnight, except TEX Talk which is available seven days a week. The two-digit codes are required to access each service.
|11||--||Admission Application Status. Call TEX to check the status of your application for admission, including a list of any missing documents that are required for a decision. You need only your student ID number (usually your social security number) to access this information. |
|15||--||Summer Orientation Registration. New students who plan to attend the University for the first time in the fall semester may call TEX to register for a summer orientation session. You may also make reservations for orientation housing and indicate which placement tests you plan to take. |
|22||--||Fee Bills and Loans-Payment Activity and Balances. Call TEX to obtain the current balance of your fee bill, emergency loan, or tuition loan. The date and amount of the most recent payment is also available.|
|23||--||Financial Bar Clearance. Call TEX to clear financial bars before or during registration by charging the total amount due to your MasterCard or Visa. If payment is approved, TEX will give you an authorization code confirming the transaction.|
|24||--||Pay Tuition and Fee Bills. Call TEX to confirm a zero bill, pay from financial aid, pay by MasterCard or Visa, or authorize an electronic transfer of funds from your bank account. If payment by credit card is approved, TEX will give you an authorization code confirming the transaction. Electronic transfer of funds requires your written authorization on an Electronic Funds Transfer Form available in Student Accounts Receivable, MAI 4. (See Electronic Funds Transfer in Payment Procedures Details for more information.)|
|31||--||Financial Aid Application and Check Status. Call TEX for the current status of your financial aid application, documents needed to complete your file, bars preventing the release of your aids funds, types of awards based on your financial need, and information about receiving your financial aid for the semester. You may also obtain the name of your counselor, phone numbers for further help, and Office of Student Financial Services hours and location.|
|33||-||Tuition Loans and Emergency Loans. Call TEX for a tuition loan or for an emergency cash loan up to $300. If your loan is approved, go to the cashiers' windows in MAI 8 by 5:00 pm the same or next business day to sign a promissory note and receive your loan. The cashiers' windows are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.|
|47||--||Loan Entrance Interview. Call TEX to complete the loan entrance interview required of all first-time borrowers of Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, and Federal Perkins Loans.|
|48||--||Loan Exit Interview. Call TEX to complete the loan exit interview required of all borrowers of Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, and Federal Supplemental Loans for Students who are no longer enrolled on at least a half-time basis.|
|51||--||Past Semester Grades and List of Current Classes. Call TEX for a list of courses and grades you earned in a previous semester or a list of your current classes. TEX will report up to two semesters per phone call. This service is offered to students enrolled in spring 1991 or later.|
|52||--||Verify Semesters Enrolled and Degrees Awarded. Call TEX to verify enrollment and degrees awarded. This information is available for students enrolled in 1980 or later.|
|54||--||Final Exam Schedule. Call TEX to hear a listing of your final exam schedule by unique number. The only information TEX requires is your student identification number and PIN. Exam information on TEX supersedes the printed exam schedule. |
|91||--||TEX Talk. TEX Talk is an automated system that provides information on more than 500 topics, ranging from registration procedures to intramural sports. Pick up one of the yellow TEX Talk information booklets on campus or look in the University Directory for a list of the five-digit codes you will need to use this service.|
|92||--||Surveys. Call TEX to respond to student affairs offices requesting survey information.|
|1||--|| to drop a course dependent upon successfully adding another course. The drop transaction will take place only if the add transaction is successful.
|2||--|| to register for or add a course. If the unique number you request is not available, TEX will offer to search for another section of the same course only if seats are available in other sections.
|3||--|| to drop a course.
|4||--|| to change registration in a course to or from the pass/fail or credit/no credit basis.
|5||--|| to change optional fee selection.
|6||--|| to list your schedule by course abbreviation, course number, and unique number.
|8||--|| to calculate or pay tuition and fees and end the call.
Note: Transaction code 8 is operational during registration periods only. However, payment of tuition and fees by credit card or electronic funds transfer is not available during access period 1 or 2. If your fees are zero or if you are eligible to charge your fee bill to your financial aid, transaction code 8 may be used to complete your registration.
|9||--|| to end the call immediately.
|*||--||to clear and reenter a partially entered response. For example, if you make a mistake entering your student ID number, press "*" and you will be prompted by TEX to reenter the number. Note, however, that "*" will not recall a completed response such as a single digit entered as a transaction code. If you enter transaction code 1, 2, 3, or 4 in error, you may enter the nonexistent unique number 99999 to respond to TEX's request for a unique number. This will have no effect on your registration, and you may then continue with other transaction codes.
Change your PIN
Initially, your PIN is assigned automatically and is based on your date of birth. However, you must change your original PIN to any six-digit number other than your birth date to access TEX the first time you register. You are advised to change your PIN frequently to avoid unauthorized access to your records on TEX. Call (512) 475-9950 to change your PIN.
Check your class schedule
If you add or drop a class, verify your schedule by using transaction code 6.
Check your fee bill
When you receive your fee bill, verify that the classes and optional fees listed are those you requested. Check the class schedule carefully so you will be aware of time or room changes that may have occurred.
You may modify your schedule during the add/drop periods only if you pay your fee bill by the deadline.
Delays in response
If you experience a response delay during your call to TEX, simply wait a moment. Several computer systems are involved in processing registration transactions and the load on these systems varies from one time to another. Delays in response may be up to thirty seconds at peak periods. Do not press keys on your telephone while waiting as this may increase your wait time.
Order of transactions
To increase the probability of obtaining the classes you need, register first for courses offered at only one meeting time; then register for courses with several sections offered at different times. It is also advisable to register first for required courses, then for electives.
To obtain the best selection of classes and ensure access to TEX, you are strongly advised to register during your earliest access period. The large volume of calls during later access periods limits access to TEX. Students who register during the late registration period are charged a fee.
If you request a section of a course that is not available, TEX will ask if you would like to search for another section of the same course, but only if you are eligible to take the class and if there are seats available in other sections. It may be to your advantage to search since additional sections of the course may have been added after the Course Schedule was printed. If you instruct TEX to search and the search is successful, TEX will schedule the section with the most seats available and give you the course abbreviation, course number, unique number, and meeting time and room. Be sure to write down the meeting information since this is the only time TEX will give it to you, and it may not be printed in the Course Schedule.
If you do not want the class TEX schedules for you, drop it using transaction code 3. If you do drop the class, another search will have the same result. If you wish to request other specific unique numbers, you may do so by using transaction code 1 or 2.
If the search is unsuccessful, requesting another unique number for the same course will also be unsuccessful since TEX already will have checked the availability of each unique number for the requested course.
Students with disabilities
Contact the Office of the Dean of Students, SSB 4.100, or call (512) 471-1201 or TDD (512) 471-4641, if you need assistance.
If your call to TEX is terminated, the transactions you completed before the termination remain in effect. For example, if you have added two classes and are in the process of adding a third when your call is terminated, your first two transactions are saved, but the one you had not completed is lost. When you call TEX back, you can verify your schedule by using transaction code 6 before continuing with additional transactions.
Each call to TEX is limited to twenty minutes. If your call is terminated because it exceeds the time limit, you may call again any time during your access period.
Verification of payment
To verify that your fee bill has been paid, call TEX (512-475-9950, option 22). If University records do not indicate that your fee bill is paid, your registration is not complete.
