Grades and symbols

Campus offices use a standard set of grades and grading symbols to mark a student's progress at the university.

An undergraduate student's performance in academic work is expressed by the following five grades.

Valid grades for undergraduates.

A

Excellent

4 grade points

B

Above average

3 grade points

C

Average

2 grade points

D

Pass

1 grade points

F

Failure

0 grade points

To receive credit for a course, an undergraduate must earn a grade of at least D. Academic departments may require a higher grade for the course to be counted toward the student's degree.

A graduate student's performance in graduate courses is expressed by the following grades.

Valid grades for graduate students.

A

4 grade points

A-

3.67 grade points

B+

3.33 grade points

B

3 grade points

B-

2.67 grade points

C+

2.33 grade points

C

2 grade points

C-

1.67 grade points

D+

1.33 grade points

D

1 grade point

D-

0.67 grade points

F

0 grade points

One of the following symbols may be assigned instead of a grade. Courses in which these symbols are recorded are not included in the grade point average.

Permanent incomplete

To receive the symbol CR, an undergraduate must earn a grade of at least D. To receive the symbol CR, a graduate student must earn a grade of at least C.
