As a student, what information of mine is public and what is private? Certain parts of your student record -- such as your address and phone number, and your attendance and degrees -- is called directory information and can be released to the public on request. Other parts are confidential, and can be released only with your permission; these include your class schedule, grades, and grade point average. Descriptions and university rules about public and private student information can be found in the educational records chapter in appendix C of the General Information catalog. (Currently-enrolled students may make their directory information private by using our Restrict My Info service.)
How do I update my address with the University? You can change your local, permanent, and email addresses, and your phone number, using our secure Address Update service online, or change them offline by writing or visiting the registrar's office. Learn more on our student addresses page.
How can I get the phone number or address of a student? That information is available online in the electronic directory. The official directory is printed on campus in October each year and is free as long as supplies last. No directory listings appear for students who have restricted their directory information.
How do I register for classes? How can I add or drop a class? Register, and add or drop, using our secure online registration service during your designated access periods.
How do I find out about any bars on my record? Get information on financial bars online using What I Owe. If the bar is administrative, like an advising or health center bar, contact the campus department that imposed the bar.
How can I get a copy of my class schedule? The registrar's class listing service puts your schedule online. Use your eid to see it.
When will I get my grades? We put your official grade report online during the final exam period. We'll mail it to you if you've been awarded university honors or your scholastic status has changed; if neither of those apply, but you want it mailed anyway, request a grade report online. (Note: the registrar does not issue grade reports to law students.)
How do I order a transcript? Official transcripts can be ordered online, in person, by telephone, or by mail. For full instructions on ordering a transcript, see our transcripts page.
How can I certify my enrollment or my degree? Get an official certification of enrollment and awarded degrees by calling our Certification section at 512 475-7540. Learn more from our certification page.
How can I verify my degrees and dates of attendance? Use the registrar's online degrees and attendance service to check when you've gone to UT and the degrees you've earned here. (The service works for all students whose records have been computerized.)
How can I get a catalog? Printed catalogs are sold at some campus-area bookstores, and appear online around the same time they appear in print. Catalog ordering instructions are available online, and you can call 512 475-7555 to have one mailed to you.
Can you send me an application for admission? An admission application is available online; direct all questions about admission to the university's admissions office at 512 475-7399.
Where can I find the dates for the first day of class, spring break, finals, and the like? The university's official academic calendar appears online; call 512 475-7591 for a sound recording of key dates.
What is a UT EID? An eid is an electronic identifier that lets you use secure services online. Using your student identification number, choose a password and activate your eid with the university's eid self-service tools. For help getting or using an eid, see eid help.
