Fee Exemptions

Fee exemptions are issued only for the period in which a student is currently enrolled; therefore, applications must be submitted no later than the date of Commencement at the end of the spring semester or the official graduation date at the end of the summer session or fall semester. The following exemptions are available.

Accredited School Scholarship

Who is eligible	Highest ranking graduate of an accredited Texas high school
Fees exempted	Tuition during first two semesters (long session) following graduation

Blind/Deaf Student Exemption

Who is eligible	A blind disabled person, or a person whose sense of hearing is nonfunctional. The student must be a Texas resident.

Exemption for children of disabled or deceased Texas firefighters and law enforcement officers

Who is eligible	Children of disabled or deceased full-paid or volunteer firefighters; full-paid or volunteer municipal, county, or state peace officers, including game wardens; and custodial officers of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice

Exemption for children of prisoners of war or persons missing in action

Who is eligible	Dependent person under 25 years of age who receives majority of support from parent. Parent must be classified by Department of Defense as a Prisoner of War or Missing in Action at time of registration.

Exemption for children of professional nursing faculty and staff members

Who is eligible	The student must be a Texas resident under 25 years of age. The faculty or staff member must be a registered nurse and must be employed or under contract at the School of Nursing during all or part of the academic term for which an exemption is sought. Children of part-time faculty and staff members receive an exemption equivalent to the parent's percentage of employment. Eligibility ends when the student has received an exemption for ten semesters and/or summer sessions at any institution or has received a baccalaureate degree.

Exemption for clinical nursing preceptors and their children

Who is eligible	To be eligible for the exemption, the preceptor must be a Texas resident and a registered nurse, must be enrolled at the University, and must serve under a written preceptor agreement with the School of Nursing. The preceptor's child must be a Texas resident under 25 years of age who is enrolled at the University. Both the preceptor and the preceptor's child are eligible for the exemption, which may be claimed either for the semester or summer session during which the preceptor serves or for any semester or summer session that begins before the first anniversary of the last day of the semester or summer session in which the preceptor served. Eligibility ends when the student has received an exemption for ten semesters and/or summer sessions at any institution or has received a baccalaureate degree.

Exemption for foster and adopted children

Who is eligible	A student who was in foster care or other residential care under the conservatorship of the Department of Protective and Regulatory Services on or after the day preceding the student's eighteenth birthday; the day of the student's fourteenth birthday if the student was also eligible for adoption on or after that day; or the day the student graduated from high school or received the equivalent of a high school diploma. The student must enroll as an undergraduate not later than the third anniversary of the date the student was discharged from the foster or other residential care, the date the student graduated from high school, or the date the student received the equivalent of a high school diploma, whichever date is earliest; or the student's twenty-first birthday. A student who was adopted and was the subject of a qualifying adoption assistance agreement under subchapter D, chapter 162, Texas Family Code

Hazlewood Act Exemption for children of Texas veterans

Who is eligible [7a]	Natural and adopted children of members of the United States Armed Forces who were Texas residents when they entered the service and who died while in service, are missing in action, or whose deaths are documented to be directly caused by illness or injury connected to service in the armed forces of the United States during the Spanish-American War or World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict (June 27, 1950, to July 27, 1953), the Cold War (began June 27, 1950), the Vietnam era (December 21, 1961, to May 7, 1975), the Grenada and Lebanon era (August 24, 1982, to July 31, 1984), the Panama era (December 20, 1989, to January 21, 1990), the Persian Gulf War (August 2, 1990, to March 3, 1991), the National Emergency by Reason of Certain Terrorist Attacks (began September 11, 2001), or any future national emergency declared in accordance with federal law. [8] Natural and adopted children of members of the Texas National Guard or the Texas Air National Guard who were killed since January 1, 1946, while on active duty in the service either of Texas or of the United States. [9] The student must Be ineligible for federal survivor benefits based on the death of a veteran parent; or, if eligible, receive federal benefits that are less than the value of the exemption. Not be in default on an education loan made or guaranteed by the federal government or the State of Texas. Have attempted fewer than 150 credit hours using the Hazlewood Act Exemption beginning with fall 1995. Be classified by the University as a Texas resident for the semester for which the exemption is sought.

Hazlewood Act Exemption for Texas ex-servicemembers

Who is eligible [7a]	The applicant must Have served in the armed forces of the United States during the Spanish-American War or World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict (June 27, 1950, to July 27, 1953), the Cold War (began June 27, 1950), the Vietnam era (December 21, 1961, to May 7, 1975), the Grenada and Lebanon era (August 24, 1982, to July 31, 1984), the Panama era (December 20, 1989, to January 21, 1990), the Persian Gulf War (August 2, 1990, to March 3, 1991), the National Emergency by Reason of Certain Terrorist Attacks (began September 11, 2001), or any future national emergency declared in accordance with federal law. At the time he or she entered the service, either resided in Texas as indicated by his or her place of entry on a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD214) or been a resident of Texas as determined in accordance with the Texas Education Code. Have served at least 181 days of active military duty and received an honorable discharge from service, a general discharge from service under honorable conditions, or an honorable separation from service. Be ineligible for federal veteran's educational benefits; or, if eligible, receive federal benefits that are less than the value of the exemption. Not be in default on an education loan made or guaranteed by the federal government or the State of Texas. Have attempted fewer than 150 credit hours using the Hazlewood Act Exemption beginning with fall 1995. Be classified by the University as a Texas resident for the semester for which the exemption is sought.

Exemption for senior citizens

Who is eligible	Those age 65 or older. Applicant must submit copy of birth certificate.

Exemption for the surviving spouse and minor children of certain deceased public servants (employees)

Who is eligible	Surviving spouse and minor children of those killed in the line of duty while employed in certain public service positions

Exemption for sounding Taps at a military funeral

Who is eligible	Students in grades six through twelve and postsecondary students who sound Taps during a military honors funeral in Texas. The student receives a voucher for the exemption from the funeral director.
Fees exempted	$25 per voucher in tuition and required fees

Required fees include the aquatic complex fee, the Gregory Gymnasium renovation fee, the health services building fee, incidental fees, the information technology fee, the international education fee, laboratory fees, the library fee, the medical services fee, the recreational sports fee, the registration fee, the student services fee, the student services building fee, supplementary fees, and the Texas Union fee.

Fee Waivers

A waiver allows for a portion of a student's tuition and/or required fees not to be paid. The student is responsible for payment of the remaining tuition and/or required fees not covered by the waiver. Waivers are issued only for the period in which a student is currently enrolled; therefore, applications must be submitted no later than the date of Commencement at the end of the spring semester or the official graduation date at the end of the summer session or fall semester.

Competitive Scholarship Waiver

Who is eligible	A limited number of nonresident or international students receiving competitive scholarships for at least $1,000. Recipients must have competed with other students, including Texas residents, for the award, which must be administered by a school-recognized scholarship committee.
Fees exempted	Nonresident portion of tuition. The student is responsible for payment of resident tuition. Waivers are granted to a limited number of students.

Economic Development and Diversification Waiver

Who is eligible	Nonresident and domiciled international students whose families transferred to Texas as part of the state's Economic Development and Diversification Plan

Waiver for faculty members, teaching assistants, and research assistants, and their dependents

Who is eligible	Employee, or employee's dependent. The employee must have a qualifying job title for at least twenty hours per week and must be appointed monthly; a teaching assistant or research assistant must hold a position related to his or her degree program. The beginning employment date must be on or before the twelfth class day (fourth class day for a summer term). If the dependent is the spouse of the employee, a marriage license must be on file with Special Billing, Student Accounts Receivable, Main Building 4.
Fees exempted	Nonresident portion of tuition. The student is responsible for payment of resident tuition.

Good Neighbor Scholarship

Who is eligible	Native-born citizens and residents from nations of the Western Hemisphere other than the United States. Applicant must furnish certified evidence of native-born citizenship and scholastic qualifications.

Nonresidents enrolled in the Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan

Who is eligible	Nonresident students whose tuition and fees are paid by the Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan
Fees exempted	Nonresident portion of tuition. The Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan pays resident tuition and required fees. The student is responsible for program, service, and course related fees.

Staff Educational Benefit

Who is eligible	Active employees appointed as full-time for at least twelve continuous months as of the first class day. Requirements are given at http://www.utexas.edu/hr/staff/edben.html.
Fees exempted	Tuition for the college in which the employee is enrolled for one eligible course or more than one course not to exceed three credit hours.

Third-Party Billing

Agencies outside the University may set up third-party billing arrangements that pay all or part of a student's tuition and fees. The student is responsible for any amount not covered by the third party. Arrangements must be made in advance with the Special Billing Office, Main Building 4.

Early High School Graduation Scholarship

Who is eligible	To be eligible for this scholarship, a student who graduated from high school on or after September 1, 2007, must have attended primarily public Texas high schools; must have graduated from a public Texas high school; must have completed the recommended or advanced high school program in less than the normal time; and must be a United States citizen or be lawfully authorized to be present in the United States. Who is eligible	Students employed as teaching assistants or assistant instructors
Fees exempted	Tuition assistance amount is indexed to the number of hours the student is employed. The award is subject to tax withholding.

TANF students

Who is eligible	The student must be a Texas-resident Texas high school graduate enrolling in college within twenty-four months of high school graduation. He or she must be less than twenty-two years old at the time of enrollment and must have received financial assistance under Chapter 31, Human Resources Code (TANF), for not less than six months during the last year of high school.
Fees exempted	Tuition and required fees for one year

Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan

Who is eligible	Students enrolled in the Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan. Plan enrollment, requirements, and payments determined and maintained by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
Fees exempted	Resident tuition and required fees. The student is responsible for program, service, and course related fees.
